Speech Faces!...

Brian had another fun day today and seems to be making a little friend! His teacher told me that they had a dance party today - and a little girl named Mackenzie wanted to be his dance partner. She's also been very helpful and motherly towards him...the new kid in class. She's really adorable. He also played "Duck Duck Goose" and had some fun at the water table. When it was time to pick him up, I walked down the hall a little early and happened to spot him coming out of the bathroom with the teacher's aide. Brian is not potty trained yet, but they always put each child on the potty anyway...which I think is GREAT! As I stood in the hallway stalking...er, I mean spying...uh, observing?...whatever...I saw him wash his hands at the low, itty bitty sink and then walk over to take one of those brown paper towels. My heart stopped a little. This was once my baby! And now he's a...kid. Who washes his hands and uses a paper towel. Hard to wrap my heart around.

After I brought Brian to school this morning, I went to an appointment. I had scheduled a consultation with an Acupuncturist. I first had to fill out the dreaded forms. My medical history - especially my fertility history with countless pregnancies and losses - usually takes lots of deep breaths and extra time to get down on paper. The doctor took me back and we had a long consultation. She is from China and, in my estimation, is the "real deal" when it comes to Chinese medicine. If you know me, you know I'm a fan of alternative medicine. My reason for turning to Acupuncture (which I'm definitely going to start - this Saturday!) is mainly for infertility. While I have had such great success with Dr. Trish in the past, this is different. I started thinking about it and realized that my fertility issues remained unchanged while seeing Dr. Trish. The rest of my life - physically and mentally - improved, but not that. Acupuncture has a great track record when it comes to helping a woman get pregnant and, most importantly, stay pregnant. So I'm going to give it a go during this cycle of IVF. Currently I'm still on the birth control pill - but should be starting my injectable stimulation meds the week of January 23rd. I'm very excited to start with this doctor and am hoping she'll help me with more than just the fertility issue. I'm kind of falling apart at the seams in every way. Maybe I'll write more about that someday soon. If any of you have had experience with Acupuncture, I'd love to hear about it!

Gavin had Occupational Therapy with Miss Stephanie this afternoon. For the first half, they worked on 'self feeding' and Gavin surprised me!

He actually held the spoon a few times! Mostly to rip it out of his mouth - but still!

It's progress, not perfection, that we're looking for.

Brian had his first school based Speech Therapy with Miss Maggie today. She wrote to me to tell me that he did a great job! She sent home homework in his backpack - two print outs that show different "speech faces" that we're to practice with him. I decided to practice during his dinner (since he was trapped in his chair and had to pay attention!) - and turned the video camera on to capture it all. I also interviewed him about his school day...and revealed his brand new backpack! One that is more appropriately sized for him. What can I say - I'm a rookie.

Prepare to smile (which is actually one of Miss Maggie's "speech faces!!!")...

  1. Hey Kate, I haven't had any experience with accupuncture, but I did have accupressure (sending low level electrical pulses (or was it ultra sound?)via pressure points) when TTC both my children. That, along with ridiculously high levels of clomid, extra vitamins, and lots and lots of prayers are, I think, what helped me conceive. I hope it helps you too!
